# Night Shift vs True Tone vs Dark Mode on Mac

Control Center's Display panel shows Night Shift, True Tone, and Dark Mode side by side. Each changes something different, and they work best together.

## The Short Version

| | Night Shift | True Tone | Dark Mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it changes | Shifts all screen colors warmer | Adjusts white balance to match room lighting | Switches the interface to dark backgrounds |
| Reduces blue light? | Yes, noticeably at warmer settings | Slightly, in warm rooms only | Less total light, same color balance |
| Affects photos & video? | Yes | Yes, subtly | No |
| When it runs | On a schedule or manually | Always, automatically | Always, or Auto by time of day |
| Available on | Nearly all current Macs | Macs and Apple displays with True Tone sensors | All current Macs |

## Night Shift: Warmer Colors

Moves the display's white point toward orange, so everything on screen looks warmer and the screen gives off less blue light. Slider for warmth, schedule for timing. Turn it off for color-critical work. Setup: https://nightshiftkeeper.com/blog/how-to-turn-on-night-shift-mac.md

## True Tone: Matches the Room

Uses ambient light sensors to adjust the screen's white balance to the light around you. Available on most MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models from 2018 onward, recent iMacs, and Apple's own external displays — System Settings → Displays. Photographers and designers often turn it off.

## Dark Mode: Darker Interface

System Settings → Appearance. Dark backgrounds with light text for menus, windows, and supporting apps. Doesn't change color temperature — a white web page without dark mode support is as bright and cool as before. "Auto" switches by time of day. Best in dim rooms.

## Can You Use All Three Together?

Yes: True Tone on all the time (unless doing color-critical work), Night Shift on in the evening at a warm setting (or all day if you like it), Appearance set to Auto. Blue light details: https://nightshiftkeeper.com/blog/does-night-shift-block-blue-light.md

## Which One for Which Problem?

- "My screen feels harsh at night" — Night Shift, warmer, plus lower brightness.
- "My screen looks too blue next to my desk lamp" — True Tone, then Night Shift.
- "White windows are blinding in the dark" — Dark Mode.
- "I want a warm screen all day, every day" — Night Shift kept on with Night Shift Keeper, since macOS switches it off outside its schedule.
